Concrete is porous, so moisture penetrates its surface during periods of rain, snow, and other events. This moisture in concrete expands when it freezes, pressing down on the concrete until it cracks, splinters, or chips.
It's very important to seal the concrete so that it penetrates the surface, strengthens and protects the coating, as freeze and thaw cycles cause moisture to expand and cause cracking and chipping.
Unlike a membrane sealant, a penetrating sealer doesn't provide a glossy finish to concrete, but it is highly absorbed into its pores and strengthens its membrane.
